Mehmet joined Globalturk Capital as a business partner. He is an experienced professional in the banking and FMCG sectors for over 35 years. He has worked in international and leading banks in Turkey and abroad, as well as multinationals in the FMCG sector at the top executive positions. He is fluent in English and Turkish.

Mehmet Sönmez is an international senior banker having over 25 years of experience starting in 1997 at Citibank, TEB-BNP Paribas and Yapı Kredi-Unicredit as their Assistant General Manager. He served as the CEO of Burganbank between 2008 and 2013.

 

He has joined the board of HSBC between 2014 and 2021 as a board member in Turkey, in charge of audit, risk management and compliance departments of the bank.

 

Currently he is the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Kentbank in Croatia (since 2020) and leading the Bank’s audit, risk, credit and remuneration committees.

 

Prior to his banking career he has worked in the FMCG sector for 15 years, at 3M as an Assistant General Manager and Avon Cosmetics as the CEO.

 

Mehmet Sönmez is also sitting at the boards of ETİ (leading biscuits and chocolate manufacturing company) and Gamak (electric motors) in Turkey.

 

He served at the boards of the Banking Association of Turkey in the early 2000 for over 8 years and in the Young Businessmen’s Association of Turkey in the mid 90’s for 5 years.

 

He is a graduate of TED Ankara College and Bosphorus University, Department of Business Administration.
